Qi Gong and its definition
Qi = 气 means air, breath or vapour in modern Chinese. Originally, the character 气 was used to describe vitality or energy. When Qi 气 is referred to below, it is in its original meaning.
Dr Pang Ming (Grand Master of Qi Gong) defines Qi Gong as follows:
Qi Gong is a practice based on a holistic view of life. When practising, the mind is consciously focused inward. Meditation, proper posture and correct breathing are all part of this alignment of the mind. Life functions are transformed, improved and perfected. Natural instincts are transformed into conscious intelligence.
My personal experiences with Qi Gong vs. sport
Throughout my life, I have always been involved in various sports. From handstands and mountain hiking in my childhood to sport climbing, mountaineering, golf and dancing in my young adulthood, I have always sought out physical activity.
For health reasons, from my early 30s onwards, I was no longer able to do many of the things I used to do and tried to keep fit by going to the gym and doing yoga. However, it was never really satisfying.
I had been interested in Qi Gong and Tai Ji since I was a very young woman, but at that time I didn't have the opportunity to take a course or learn more about it.
After taking a break from sport for several years, in 2023 I felt compelled to start looking for a teacher. I was led to my master Theo, and I am grateful every day for this stroke of luck.
What I have achieved for my body, soul and spirit in two years of Qi Gong, I did not manage to achieve in seven years of yoga and gym training.
Body
In a car accident, my musculoskeletal system was significantly affected and caused me recurring problems. With qigong, I have been able to manage my pain and mobility restrictions well. Other health issues that I have had since childhood have also been significantly reduced, so that my body feels much better. Weight fluctuations, which were often caused by hormones, are also no longer an issue.
Soul
I am increasingly experiencing a previously unknown feeling of happiness and a conscious connection to myself and my innermost being. I feel the qi flowing through my body and nourishing my soul. A harmony settles within me that allows me to be completely at one with myself.
Mind
During my trip to China, I was particularly struck by the effect of Qi Gong on the mind. In the past, I avoided crowds and public transport because it was too much for me mentally. I also disliked long flights, and my mind would spin all kinds of stories. Through practising Qi Gong, I was able to calm my mind, find peace within myself even in large crowds, and simply be.
Qi Gong vs. sport: what is the difference?
Qi Gong
Qi Gong focuses on physical movement, awareness, self-control and breath regulation.
Consciousness guides the qi, and the qi guides the body. All movements follow the qi. The relationship between mind, qi and body is experienced.
It is about slowing down and reducing energy consumption, harmonising life energy and strengthening vitality.
Sport
Sport is primarily about physical training, endurance and muscle building.
Instead of consciousness, the emphasis is on the physical aspect.
It's about acceleration and increase in energy consumption.
